Is Auto Insurance in Indiana a Necessity or a Luxury?

Because of the current economic crisis, many people wonder if auto insurance in Indiana is a necessity or a luxury. While buying a car, many people think that if they are careful, and don’t get pulled over, that they can save money by foregoing the purchase of car insurance. If you have considered this in the past, you should consider two things: In the long run this can prove to be much more expensive, and having current car insurance is also the law.

Now you might ask, “how could paying nothing possibly be more expensive than paying an expensive premium every month?” Basically you cannot control everything that happens on the road. Even if you have a clean driving record, and have never been in an accident, that doesn’t guarantee that you will not have any problems in the future.

Let’s say, hypothetically, that you have gone three years without insurance, and you feel good for saving a few thousand dollars. One day you are driving your car down the road during a storm, and you hydroplane in to another car, causing significant damage. Even though you are a responsible driver, you couldn’t avoid this accident.

Even though no one is hurt, the other guy’s car and the one you are driving are both totaled. His car is worth $15,000 and yours is worth $12,000. Because it was your fault, you are fully responsible for all of the costs of the accident. Normally having insurance would cover most, if not all of the costs, but because you decided to not to purchase it, you have sole responsibility.

Now if you were paying $100 dollars a month for insurance, which is normal, you would have saved $3,600 over the previous three years. Is saving a few thousand dollars worth putting yourself through the risk of being responsible for tens of thousands of dollars worth of damages in the case of an accident? Even if you think it is worth the risk, there is still another big reason why you shouldn’t do so.

If you are driving in the state of Indiana, and a police officer discovers you are not currently insured, you could be in some serious trouble. Under the state law, you can be fined, have your license revoked, and even face jail time. When it is on your record that you have a history of not having insurance it will become increasingly expensive to obtain car insurance.
